Black Cats (黒猫 Kuroneko) are talking humanoid felines who have been in coexistence with the Shinigamis since ancient times.
Overview[]
A black cat forms a partnership with a Shinigami through a contract, and supports his/her contractor in all sort of ways, such as making prophecies, curses, threats, schedule management and of course eliminating evil spirits.[1] Once the contract is established, the black cat can’t go against the Shinigami, no matter their relationship, as long as he/she is being paid the proper dues, which is also an obligation to the Shinigami. The penalty to a black cat for abandoning his/her master is a 5000 yen fine and getting his/her license suspended for 10 years.[2]
There is a ranking system in terms of the degree of a black cat’s aptitudes, which goes from Level 1 being the lowest. One way to determine a black cat’s rank is the Black Cat Contractor Ranking Exam, where high-ranking black cats, who can use an advanced technique called Black Cat Magic, work as exam invigilators.[3]
Despite their coexistence since long ago, the Black Cats’ relationship with the Shinigamis has not always been positive, which is proven by the Black Cat Secret Meeting.[4]

- Black Cats can also work for a Damashigami and a Shirushigami (Suzu works for Shirushigami Kain and Tama works for Damashigami Renge Shima).
