As a child, Sakura Mamiya mysteriously disappeared in the woods behind her grandma's home. She returned whole and healthy, but since then she has had power to see ghosts. Now a teenager, she just wishes the ghosts would leave her alone! At school, the desk next to Sakura's has been empty since the start of the school year. Then one day her always-absent classmate Rinne Rokudo shows up, and he's far more than what he seems!
Sakura's curiosity about the mysterious Rinne draws her deeper into an amazing world on the boundary between the living and the dead. Helping Rinne is one thing, but will tagging along with him leave her trapped in the afterlife? And does Rinne really know what he's doing? Dealing with the afterlife isn't easy, escpecially when you don't know all the rules?
"The Mysterious Classmate" (謎のクラスメート "Nazo no Kurasumēto")
After an encounter with a lady in a world where a giant red wheel floats in the sky during her childhood, Sakura Mamiya gained the power to see ghosts. As she starts high school, she thought her life would change, which would be the case, as she meets a classmate named Rinne Rokudo, who describes himself as "sort of" a Shinigami.

"The Legend of the Weather Hutch" (百葉箱の伝説 "Hyakuyōbaku no Densetsu")
As a cell phone is plagued by a repetitive angry call, Rinne who seems to be poor, speaks of a legend about having a paranormal problem getting solved by leaving a note describing the problem, a monetary offering, and a gift in an instrument shelter behind the school.

"Four O'clock Behind the Gym" (体育館裏4時 "Taiikukan Ura Yo-ji")
Rinne is still working on the case of the repetitive angry call made by a ghost, and Sakura assists him. There is a price to pay which Rinne can hardly accept to help the ghost pass on.

"Have We Met?" (どこかで会った女 "Doko ka de Atta Onna")
Every student of Sankai High had a dream, where they are threatened to leave an offering in the school’s instrument shelter. As Sakura accuses Rinne of deceit to get offerings, she meets again the lady she met long ago, who turns out to be Rinne’s grandmother.

"Y·O·U·N·G Woman" (お・ね・え・さ・ん "O Ne E Sa N")
Rinne must save Sakura before she ends up entering the Wheel of Reincarnation. In the process, Sakura gets the answers to many questions she asked herself.

"Mystery in the Club Building" (クラブ棟の怪 "Kurabutō no Kai")
Sakura learns of Rinne’s shinigami and human mixed heritage. A floating ball of fire is seen in the window of an abandoned clubhouse of the school, and Sakura meets a peculiar black cat.

"Black Cat by Contract" (契約黒猫 "Keiyaku Kuroneko")
Sakura learns further about Rinne, who lives in the abandoned club building of Sankai High and is being urged by the black cat named Rokumon to form a contract with him.

"Afraid to Fall Asleep" (眠るのがこわい "Nemuru no ga Kowai")
A second-year student named Kaori Himekawa is being haunted by an ancient warrior in her dreams causing her to be afraid to sleep. She is persuaded to seek help from Rinne.
